An old stone bridge on a grey day, in calm oil paint
There is no sunshine in The Stone Crossing, and it does not need any. A heavy grey sky hangs over a seaside course. A small humped bridge of rough grey stone crosses a stream, with the water running dark under its arch and on towards you. Tufts of rough grass and moss crowd the banks. Beyond, a red flag stands on the green and low dunes roll out to a strip of sea.
The palette is restrained: slate, moss, sand and grey-blue, with that one red flag as the bright spot. It suits a golfer who loves the old seaside courses and does not mind a bit of weather. It goes well with dark wood, tweed and stone, so think study, snug or a hallway in an older house.
The tall original has a lot of cloudy sky above. On the poster and the framed canvas the wide crop brings everything closer: the bridge, the flag and the dunes fill the frame, with less sky and less water. The mug keeps the full scene. You will find it with the other seaside paintings on our golf prints page.
