A handshake on the green, in fresh mid-century gouache
The putt has dropped. On a bright green, a young woman in a coral shirt, cream skirt and grey cap bends to lift her ball out of the cup, putter in her other hand. Her playing partner, an older woman with grey hair, a white visor and a teal shirt, is stepping in with her hand out to shake. The flagstick lies on the grass in front of them, its cream flag spread out. Sandy bunkers curve round the green, with hills, trees and a pale blue sky behind.
Gouache is a thick, chalky kind of watercolour that dries flat and bright. This picture has that look, with simple shapes and fresh colours of green, sand, teal and coral. It is a happy, friendly picture about good manners on the course, so it suits a kitchen, a family room or a playroom. It makes a sweet gift for two generations who play together, or for a ladies' section prize. For the manners of the game, see what golf etiquette is.
The framed poster keeps everything, sky and flagstick included. On wood and canvas the crop cuts out the sky, the hole and the flagstick, so the two women and the ball in her hand fill the frame.
