A 1920s golfer at the finish, as a sepia sporting illustration
He has just hit it. The club is wrapped high behind his head, a clump of turf is still flying off the ground, and his weight has rolled onto his front foot. He wears a flat cap, a buttoned cardigan, plus-fours and long socks with brogues. Behind him, wind-bent trees and gorse sit on sandy dunes, and grey waves roll in from the sea.
Plus-fours are the baggy trousers that stop just below the knee. Hickory is a wood, and it is what the shaft of his club is made of. The picture is drawn as a vintage sporting illustration, in warm sepia and cream, like a page from an old book. It suits the golfer who loves the history of the game, and it fits in with old furniture, leather and bookshelves. A study or a library corner would suit it well.
The full figure, from the club head to his shoes, is only in the tall prints and on the mug. The framed canvas and the other wide formats crop in to his body against the dunes and the sea, and the raised club and his feet drop out of view. Our guide to golf terminology explains more of the old words.
