Tea and a bacon roll at the turn, as a warm oil still life
Steam curls up from a cream mug of tea. Next to it, on a dark plate, sits a fat bacon roll with butter melting out of the side. A clipboard with a pencil lies on the rough timber counter, and a brown leather golf glove has been tossed down beside it. Through the green-framed window, the course stretches away under a cloudy sky, with trees in autumn colours and a bright fairway.
The turn is the break between the ninth and tenth holes, and the halfway hut is where you can stop for a hot drink and a bite. A still life is a painting of objects on a table, and this one is done in thick, warm oil paint in browns, creams and greens. It is a perfect fit for a kitchen, a breakfast room or the wall by the kettle, and it suits any golfer whose favourite bit of the round involves a bacon roll.
The framed poster and the mug show it all, from the roof beams to the glove. On the canvas and the other wide formats the glove sits right at the edge or slips out, and the tea, the roll and the window view fill the frame.
