Clubhouse Evening: Golf Painting

The round is over and nobody is in the picture, but you can tell someone has just sat down. A worn brown leather golf bag leans by a wicker armchair. On a small round table there is a flat cap on a folded newspaper, a glass of something amber on a coaster and a lamp with a glowing shade. Past the timber posts of the veranda, the course drops away into dusk, dark trees against a sky with a last line of orange. A small flag shows on a green far off.

It is painted in a rich, cosy oil style, all amber, deep green and brown. It belongs somewhere warm: a study, a snug, a den with a leather chair, or the wall by the drinks cabinet. Give it to the golfer whose favourite hour is the one just after the last putt.

The framed poster and the mug show the full height, with the veranda roof above and the boards below. The poster and the framed canvas crop wider, keeping the bag, the chair, the lamp and the view of the course.
